A New Hampshire native, Robbins quickly established himself as one of the state’s top amateur golfers. He was a finalist in the New Hampshire Amateur Championship in 1961, 1964 and 1979 before capturing the title in 1965. His success extended throughout New England, as he finished as a finalist in the New England Amateur Championship in 1962, when the event was contested in match play, before winning the championship in 1978.
One of the standout accomplishments of Robbins’ amateur career came in 1971, when he won the Maine Open. Robbins finished 36 holes at six-under par, two strokes ahead of the professionals competing for low-professional honors.
Robbins also excelled at the collegiate level while attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was named an All-American in 1965, 1966 and 1967, establishing himself as one of the premier collegiate golfers in the country.
In 1972, Robbins turned professional and pursued a career in the professional ranks before later regaining his amateur status. He returned to professional golf in 1994 and competed on the PGA Senior Tour from 1995 through 1997.
Throughout his career, Robbins’ success was supported by his family, particularly his wife, who played an important role when he returned to professional golf. Robbins has credited her with helping run the family business, allowing him to dedicate more time and attention to his golf career.
From his New Hampshire Amateur Championship victory to his New England Amateur title, Maine Open championship, All-American honors and professional career, Robbins has left an enduring mark on the game. His accomplishments represent a lifetime of excellence in golf and a career that began on New Hampshire’s courses and reached well beyond the Granite State.
For his outstanding achievements and lasting contributions to the game, Steve Robbins will be inducted into the New Hampshire Golf Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2026.
